The following are all nearby English Heritage sites:


  • Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre (3.1 miles) – Contains the ruins of a Roman Saxon Shore fort. Has a museum and exhibits on Roman life
  • Deal Castle (10 miles) – This impressive castle with its Tudor Rose design and circular bastions for cannons linked by a network of passages
  • Walmer Castle and Gardens (10.8 miles) – A coastal artillery fort, constructed by King Henry VIII. Home to the original Wellington Boots, and the Queen Mother’s Celebration Garden
  • Dover Castle (15.7 miles) – England’s largest castle situated on the cliffs above the sea. It’s a medieval castle, with dungeons and secret war tunnels to explore.


Further afield, but suitable for a day trip, if you’re keen:
  • Leeds Castle (33.9 miles) - Travel from a medieval queen's room to the 1920s, plus gardens, golf, zip slides and falconry
  • Sissinghurst Castle (40.4 miles) - Vita Sackville-West's famous gardens, now National Trust, in intricately designed themed areas
  • Bodiam Castle (48.5 miles) - 14th-century castle with a moat, soaring towers, events and exhibitions, plus a cafe
  • Upnor Castle (50.3 miles) - Fort with tranquil grounds adjoining a riverside village with coin rubbing and canon firing.
